Wikki Tourists player in action

Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin recorded a 1-0 victory over Wikki Tourists of Bauchi to end a three-match poor run in the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Wednesday.

The match day four encounter in the NPFL played at the Kwara Stadium Complex in Ilorin was the hosts’ first victory of the season.

Stephen Alfred’s free kick from 25 yards out put the struggling hosts ahead in the 14th minute.

After the goal, both teams took the game to each other but fluffed many of their scoring opportunities.

Wikki Tourists’ Clement Udey almost drew the visitors level in the 41st minute, but his effort went inches away from goal.l

The visitors returned stronger in the second half, but the return of Akeem Onigbari for the hosts  made life difficult for Wikki Tourists’ attackers.

Kwara United’s Luqman Binuyo was sent off for a second booking with three minutes left to play but the visitors could not take advantage of the opportunity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kwara United had lost 0-2 to Niger Tornadoes on match day one, and 0-1 to MFM FC of Lagos on match day two.

They then suffered a 0-2 defeat to FC IfeanyiUbah.

Kwara United will now travel to Uyo to take on Akwa United on Sunday at the Nest of Champions. PM News reports.

Borussia Dortmund have rejected a bid in excess of £50m from Arsenal for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to Sky Sports.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the two clubs are in discussions over the Gabon international.

Aubameyang has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates, while Olivier Giroud could head to Dortmund as part of a possible swap deal.

Arsenal’s club officials have been in Germany as they attempt to negotiate a deal.

Wenger revealed on Monday that he is neither “confident or not confident” about completing the signing.

He added: “You never know how close you are.

“This is the kind of thing – he is one of the possible movements, but we have other things in mind as well. We have plenty of opportunities and the final decision is not made.

“At the moment we are not close to any deal, Aubameyang or anybody else.”

The 28-year-old is thought to be in favour of move away from Dortmund and was left out of their squad for the Friday’s 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin.

Sporting director Michael Zorc told Dortmund’s Twitter feed: “We have the impression at the moment that he [Aubameyang] has his head on other things and is not fully focused.”

Should Aubameyang arrive at the Emirates, he would be reunited with former Dortmund team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the Armenian having completed a swap deal in which Alexis Sanchez went to Manchester United.

A 12-year-old boarding school student, identified as Storm, whose lifeless body was found in her room on Tuesday, Jan 23, is believed to have committed suicide after she was bullied by classmates because she was a nerd and loved Math and Science.

The beautiful  girl who took her own life inside a prestigious boarding school in Washington D.C, was a seventh-grader at the SEED Public Charter School of Washington (SEED DC).

Police responded to the school after they received a report of an unconscious person and they are currently investigating the death as a suicide.

Local News4 interviewed parents of two children at the school, and they were told that Storm was being bullied.

Social media reports that the girl was called a nerd because of her interest in Math and Science but the school is yet to confirm that Storm was a victim of bullying.

The school released a statement regarding Storm’s death that reads: “We are deeply saddened to report that a SEED DC student unexpectedly passed away this morning. This is, of course, a terrible tragedy for the family first and foremost, as well as for the entire SEED Community. We ask that you respect the privacy of the family and of our community of scholars and teachers in their mourning.”

Reviews on the website Greatschools.org shows that SEED DC may have a problem with bullying.

One review about SEED DC read: “This school almost breeds bullies. It allows students to beat up other kids and teachers with no consequences. There is no accountability.”

Another reviewer wrote: “They breed bullies and then protect them, NOT, the victims. Don’t let your children stay in the dorms.”

http://massmediang.com/celebrities-it-was-love-at-first-sight-nigerian-couple-who-married-7-days-after-they-met-on-facebook-speak-to-bbc/

Anwuka Chetachi assumpta 2016054027DE

Do you remember them? The newlywed Nigerian couple who got married after seven days of acquaintance on social media have been interviewed by the BBC Africa. They said it was absolutely “Love at first sight.”

The young man, Chidimma Amedu, had put up a post on 30 December, asking any woman interested in being his wife to reply. Sophy Ijeoma was the first to reply and she ‘got the job’.

Read very interesting details of their experience which they shared with the BBC.

The proposal

“Am of age to and I am ready to say I do and am wasting no time.

“Send in your applications – the most qualified will be married on January 6, 2018. Application closes 12 midnight, 31/12/2017,” he posted.

He then followed up with subsequent posts. “Am serious about this oh and don’t say you did not see it on time. Good luck.”

He received a couple of responses, but one from a certain Sophy Ijeoma was the one which caught his attention.

Am interested, just DM me…lols,” her post read.

At first, she thought it was a joke and she simply replied to keep the thread flowing.

Man on a mission

A direct message from him to her inbox, followed by a Facebook call, would change her life’s trajectory.

Two days after their first conversation, he travelled some 500km (300 miles) from his home in the northern city of Abuja, to Enugu in the east where she lived.

She had been waiting for him outside a retail store and in true fairy-tale style, “it was love at first sight”, she recalled.

“He is the most handsome man I’ve ever met and I liked him instantly.”

After two hours of “awkward” conversation, he asked her to go to meet his uncle, who incidentally is also resident in Enugu.

Asked what was going through her mind at the time, she said she thought it was all a bit of a joke, but she was excited about it and thought Chidimma was quite an interesting character.

Tradition meets modernity

“We got to the uncle’s house and he said: ‘Uncle, meet the woman I want to marry.'”

Like Chidimma, his family don’t seem to hang about when it comes to getting things done, because the uncle gave his approval.

Getting family backing for your choice of spouse is an essential part of Igbo culture.

Whereas picking your future wife from dozens of respondents to a Facebook marriage advert and marrying her in six days is decidedly not.

At this point in their day-old relationship, it was beginning to dawn on Sophy that this fellow was not playing, but how do you commit to marrying someone you only just met?

She would not comment on whether they had even shared as much as a kiss at that point, but maintained she was captivated by how focused and determined her new fiancé was.

“When I saw him for the first time, I definitely found him attractive, but what I didn’t know was how serious he was about marrying me.

“It was after we met the uncle and his wife, that I realised that this could actually happen and I wanted it.”

The engagement

It was now her turn to worry about how she was going to get the approval of her family to marry a guy she had just met on Facebook.

But they had momentum going for them. Having met and fallen in love at first sight, or first message, if you like, and getting Chidimma’s uncle’s approval, the couple decided to complete the cycle by visiting Sophy’s family the same day.

Sophy recounted how she relayed the information to her mother. Her dad had passed away, and her mum said she did not have the final word in terms of giving approval for her to be married, so it was up to Sophy’s elder brother to give his blessings.

It would appear the odds were firmly in their favour as Sophy’s brother gave his blessings too.

So after a few questions from her brother, it was official – Chidimma and Sophy were engaged to be married in six days.

On the rebound?

Last year Chidimma was engaged to another woman and the wedding was scheduled for December, but the relationship fell apart in March leaving him dejected.

As December approached, the disappointment of not being able to fulfil his dream of getting married made him put up the post, he said.

“I had the desire to get married, I had a date in mind, but no bride, so I decided to place an advert as a joke, but I was open and up for it.”

Asked whether she knew about his earlier engagement and her thoughts on how this seemingly rushed marriage might be seen as a rebound, Sophy dismissed any suggestions that her relationship was not well thought through.

“I don’t care about that – when you see what you want, you go for it.”

They had been friends on Facebook for more than a year, but had never met or spoken to each other until the advert.

“Am interested, just DM me…lols” was all it took for the union to be formed.

Sophy admitted her friends were sceptical about the whole thing, while some are still in disbelief, but as she said: “When you see the one, you will know he is the one”.

Happily ever after?

They got married on 6 January in a traditional Igbo ceremony, and posted photos of their wedding day on Facebook of course – to the amusement of the social media community.

Chidimma put up a post saying people may have thought he had been joking but he clearly wasn’t.

As can be expected, there were mixed reactions, but mainly a lot of support for the couple.

They hope to have a church wedding in April and perhaps a honeymoon somewhere nice, he said.

The Nigerian Police reportedly deployed about 500 policemen to Ozubulu community in Anambra State where the alleged target of the 2017 church shooting, Aloysius Ikegwuonu aka Bishop, buried his father, PUNCH reports.

Massmediang gathered from those who attended the burial ceremony which commenced today,Friday, January 12, that there were several policemen and other security operatives in virtually every corner of Ozubulu.

Recall that 13 persons were killed after gunmen stormed St. Phillips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in August, 2017. Another 29 were been wounded, and reports claimed the gunmen had been in search of Bishop, a South African based Nigerian businessman who was in Nigeria visiting. His father, Cyprian Ikegwuonu, was one of the deceased in the attack, and Bishop, speaking to journalists on Thursday, said everything is in place to give his father a befitting burial.

Tension is however reported to be high in the community as the gunmen are expected to once again stage an attack during the funeral. A police source who spoke to Punch claimed the decision has been made to deploy 500 policemen to Ozubulu to keep the peace.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Nkeiruka Nwode, who confirmed the deployment of policemen to the community, refused to state the number of officers deployed.
She stated that the police seeks to avoid a repeat of the killings, describing the event as unfortunate. She said: As we are talking now,  so many of our men have been drafted to the community to make sure that adequate security is provided.

What happened on that fateful day was unfortunate and the command does not want to encounter such again in this state or elsewhere. Every single person or group coming for the burial will be adequately screened because the command sees the security of the people as our number one priority.

The woman also hinted on the problem as she claimed the DPO listened to a civilian without hearing her own part concerning an issue.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, who was involved in a bike accident in Abuja on December 26, 2017 has been discharged from the hospital.

This revelation was made by the President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, on Friday on his Twitter handle and Facebook pages.

“Yusuf Muhammadu Buhari has been discharged from Cedarcrest Hospitals, Abuja. Read full statement released today by the hospital.

“Wish him a complete and speedy recovery,” Ahmad wrote.

The Presidency had, earlier in the day, issued a statement indicating that Yusuf’s health had remarkably imroved and he was ready to be discharged.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Adesina said the news of Yusuf’s improved health and imminent discharge was contained in a statement dated January 12, 2018 and issued  by the Medical Director of the Cedarcrest Hospital, Dr. Felix Ogedegbe.

He was however not specific on the exact day Yusuf would be discharged.

He reproduced Ogedegbe’s statement, which also denied media reports that the President’s wife, Aisha, also suffered shock and was treated at the hospital.

He also quoted the report as saying that there was also no truth in the report that Yusuf was involved in the accident alongside his friend.

Anwuka Chetachi assumpta 2016054027DE

There is palpable outrage in Ghana after school-girls were reportedly banned from crossing a river on Tuesdays while they are menstruating.

The ban, apparently given by a local river god, has outraged children’s activists, especially as girls must cross the river to reach school. It means girls in the Upper Denkyira East district, in the Central Region, could miss out on their education.
Sub-Saharan Africa is already struggling to keep girls in school during their periods. The UN’s scientific and education organisation, Unesco, estimates one in 10 girls in the region does not attend school because they are menstruating.

Unicef’s menstrual hygiene ambassador Shamima Muslim Alhassan told BBC Pidgin that the directive, which applies to part of the River Ofin, violated girls’ right to education. It seems the gods are really powerful aren’t they?” she said.

Central Regional Minister Kwamena Duncan has given indications he will coordinate with the Ashanti regional minister to find a solution. Many cultures have myths and taboos around menstruation. In Madagascar, some females are told not to wash during their periods and in Nepal some women are forced to sleep in huts away from the rest of the family.

Liverpool forward, Mohamed Salah has been crowned the African Footballer of the Year for 2017 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The Egyptian forward dethroned Leicester City’s forward, Riyad Mahrez, to win the prestigous award, shaking off competitions from club teammate, Sadio Mane (2nd) and Borrusia Dortmund striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (3rd).

Recall that Salah was last month voted BBC African Footballer of the Year beating Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Nigeria’s Victor Moses to the prize.

Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, says after retiring from politics, he would become the pastor of a “very big ministry”.

He said his next target after leaving office is to become the president of the country after which he would go into full-time ministry.

Fayose said his “popularity” and “influence” would serve him in achieving his ambitions.

He said this during an interactive session with some reporters in Lagos.

“There is nobody reasonably who doesn’t know who Ayo Fayose is and the decision to me being president is spiritual and physical on the other hand because when your time comes, it will manifest,” he said.

“I am a force God has created at this time. When I retire, I’m going to become a pastor with a very big ministry.

“After being president of Nigeria, I will be a pastor who will be a major force all over the world.”

Speaking on his “ spiritual gift” the governor said he had been getting requests to prophecy about Nigeria’s future.

“Nigerians know that if I give you figures, they find it like that even my prophecies. Some of the things I said about last year came to pass. Some people have been calling me to ask for the prophecies for 2018,” he said

He said he is prepared to be maltreated over his criticisms of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“One pastor said the federal government will bundle Fayose this year, and so? Let them come and do it, who is begging them? I’m equally prepared,” he said.“I remember Gani Fawehimi, he goes around with his bag. You can arrest him any day, what is the big deal? Some people, their promotion will come as a result of oppression. Our enemies are not our enemies in totality, they are catalysts to our success so I don’t care.

“If the federal government wants to go after me, I am more than available. They know my address, I’m in Magodo now, and tomorrow I’m going to Ekiti. I’m available for them. Those who keep their lives will still lose it.”

On his presidential ambition, the governor said: “Nigerians know that I represent the interest of the common man. If my party picks me as their candidate, I will win this election against President Buhari”.

Fayose also advised the president to quit politics at the end of his first term in office.

He said Buhari would do a great disservice to the nation by contesting the 2019 election.

“We pray for our president that God will grant him wisdom to lead the nation right because as it is now, we are drifting,” he said.

“He is old; he needs the energy to complete his tenure. God will give him the energy to complete this tenure and God will help us to tell him to go and sit in Daura and not contest in 2019. That is my prayer for Nigeria. That he goes to sit in Daura peacefully like the late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela and go home and rest.”
